We Happy Few is a single-player action adventure game set in a creepy dystopian alternate universe. In the video below I play through the first 40 minutes of gameplay with Arthur, which is one of three possible story lines available in this game. We Happy Few was released by Compulsion Games on August 10th, 2018 and I am playing the steam version on PC in this video.
I think the art and concept of this game are great and the social questions that come up about conformity and society are definitely front and center. The intro was a good balance of creepy delusional mystery and the right amount of story telling with some tutorials to give you the background you need to get started.
This game is set in in a retrofuturistic 1960’s England where society is fuelled by a drug called Joy. In this play through, Arthur begins to see the truth behind society when he chooses early to skip his normal dose of Joy. The rest of his community quickly label him a “downer” and try to pressure him back into conformity to join the rest of society in their drug-induced stupor.
I’m sure I will pick this game up again soon for a second live stream installment. If you can’t wait to see more of this game, let me know!
